Question:
Cool concept! But I have a question. Shouldn’t the mounts hold the grade rod 90 degrees from where pictures show it? For 2 reasons, 1. You will be able to see/read the grade rod. 2. The receiver/target would be visible and also be able to “receive” signal from laser that is set up in front, beside OR from behind machine. As it is now laser must be on right side of machine which is typically in the swing direction of operator.

It is movable to either side of the arm. I’d does mean that you have to have the laser to one side or the other. I personally pay more attention to the beeping than to the visual display. It also matters what style receiver you have too.
